Questions

What is UTZ CERTIFIED?

UTZ CERTIFIED is a global coffee certification program. With UTZ CERTIFIED, your favorite coffee brand knows exactly where their coffee comes from and that it was grown responsibly. UTZ CERTIFIED coffee growers take care of local communities and the environment.

Why does UTZ CERTIFIED exist?

Good coffee is no longer just a matter of taste, quality and price; today's consumers increasingly demand that their coffee be grown responsibly and expect roasters to provide assurances that their coffee was produced responsibly.

UTZ CERTIFIED is a guarantee that coffee is grown on farms that use agrochemicals properly, where workers and their families live in adequate housing, have access to healthcare, schools and training, and that their labor rights are protected.

UTZ CERTIFIED also strives to empower farmers with professional coffee-growing and marketing techniques, so they can access more markets and develop better relationships with their buyers.

All in all, with UTZ CERTIFIED, you can continue enjoying your coffee, while trusting that it was grown in a sustainable way.

Why do coffee growers join UTZ CERTIFIED?

The UTZ CERTIFIED program helps growers become more professional and competitive . With an UTZ certification, coffee farmers of all sizes can demonstrate good agricultural practices, efficient farming methods and responsible production of their coffee.
Moreover, because coffee roasters and brands are increasingly demanding UTZ CERTIFIED coffee, certification can offer growers access to new markets.

The UTZ CERTIFIED program gives cooperatives and farms access to an international network of coffee growers, support programs of buyers and non-governmental organizations, technical assistance and coaching from UTZ-trained agronomists and field representatives.

Why do coffee brands join UTZ CERTIFIED?

UTZ CERTIFIED is a credible tool for brands to prove to their consumers that their coffee is responsibly grown. With UTZ certification, brands are able to convey trust and credibility.

Is UTZ CERTIFIED something like Fairtrade?

Fairtrade and UTZ CERTIFIED are both leading coffee certification programs. However, we are not the same. Various certification schemes carry and provide different tools that allow the coffee sector to be more sustainable and responsible. Fairtrade and UTZ share a vision of jointly working together towards more sustainable coffee.

Fairtrade is a poverty reduction program that invites consumers to choose Fairtrade-labelled products and actively participate in social and environmental improvements by paying a premium price. The price paid by consumers for Fairtrade coffee goes to disadvantaged farmers to make them more prosperous.

Market statistics show that the majority of consumers and companies are not willing to make this active contribution. UTZ CERTIFIED believes people want to continue buying their favorite brand for its quality, taste and price, while knowing that it is being produced in a sustainable way. UTZ CERTIFIED is about professionalism in coffee growing and traceability to ensure this.

Does UTZ CERTIFIED check the farms?

UTZ CERTIFIED coffee farms are checked every year to ensure they are still in compliance with UTZ CERTIFIED requirements. Professional independent auditors carry out these assessments.

Do farmers get a fair price for their coffee?

Coffee with an UTZ certification has extra value and empowers growers to negotiate a better price for their product. Buyers recognize this value by paying coffee growers a premium for UTZ-certified coffee.
The price for UTZ-certified coffee is determined in the negotiation process between buyer and seller. UTZ CERTIFIED does not interfere in these negotiations.
